System Compatibility – PetSafe and SportDog

by Gajan Retnasaba on February 28, 2010

A common question is whether you can mix systems together, so use say an Innotek Collar with say an Invisible Fence system.

Can I use one of the Innotek 4100 collars with my Invisible Fence? I just got a rescue chocolate lab, and I want to be able to have a rechargeable collar and be able to set the shock level myself?

Hi Sam,

For the most part there is no compatibility between brands. So the Innotek IUC-4100 collar will not work with any other system, and in particular will not work with an Invisible Fence system.

The single exception is the SportDog and PetSafe. You can use a SportDog SDF-100 system with any PetSafe inground system collar. Similarly you can use the SportDog collar with any PetSafe system.

Hope that clears up the compatibility issue.

Stu

I have a PetSafe Basic system and my neighbors have SportDOG SDF-100 on one side and then Invisiable Fence on the other. My system does not work even though the loop light is on and i have new collars. Any recommendations on distance of wires between neighbors? Thanks

ADMIN – HI Dave. The Boundary Wire should be installed 5-10 feet away from metal and/or electromagnetic interference (e.g., metal siding, aluminum siding, metal roof, metal or wire fencing, HVAC equipment, other electric fencing, underground utilities, etc) to avoid amplification problems, unintended corrections to the dog’s collar or signal interference.
We recommend laying the wire where you think you want it on top of the ground and testing the collar to make sure it beeps and corrects at the right location on the perimeter loop. Once the correct location has been determined, then you can bury your wire no more than 1″ – 3″ in the ground or you can tack it to the ground using lawn staples.

I have 4 dogs I use SportDOG Brand SDF-R collars
for SDF-100A Inground fence & Petsafe Indoor Radio fence
disks (to keep them off counters). I’m looking for a Petsafe wireless
unit to take camping that would work witj my SportDOG SDF-R
collars. Does Petsafe make a compatible wireless unit?

ADMIN – Hi Jill. No. At this time, there is not a compatible wireless system to any of the wired dog fence collars.

Hi, this website has been extremely helpful, particularly the training information. My question is: I have a Petsafe Yardmax system that I’m currently training our dog for, but I’d like to have some more flexibility and simplicity of training for my wife and kids to get more involved. I was thinking of getting the Petsafe Remote trainer collar (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073WXJPRB/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A2J686HREQQIO1&th=1) and wonder if I could just use that collar for training both out walking and for the yard boundary/containment. I thought that since they were both Petsafe products, the Yardmax would recognize the Remote trainer but I can’t find confirmation, or whether it’s a good idea or not. I appreciate any help. thanks! – pete

ADMIN – Hi Pete. Unfortunately, the PetSafe YardMax is exclusive unto itself. The YardMax collar only works with the YardMax system and vice versa. At this time, there is not another collar, containment or training, that would work with your current fence.

I am ordering the SportDog SDF-100A in-ground fence and installing it this weekend. The kit i got comes with a collar but it looks massive (9v Battery model). I have a 60lb puppy that it will be perfect for, but i also have a 15lb adult dog that i think is too small for the 9v collar. The PetSafe brand have collars for smaller dogs and i read somewhere that SportDog and PetSafe are sister companies with the same manufacturer. Will a PetSafe collar work with my fence?

Thanks.

ADMIN – Hi Lars. For your smaller dog you can use the PetSafe Ultra Lite Deluxe collar. This collar is safe for dogs as small as 8 pounds. You can find it here: https://www.dogfencediy.com/store/petsafe/collars/petsafe-deluxe-collar.html
Please note that it IS a battery operated collar and that you will need to buy the specific battery for this collar. They run $8 for a 2 pack of batteries and one battery usually lasts about 2 to 3 months, depending on how often your dog tests the boundary.

I have the Innotek Basic In-ground pet Fencing system SD-2000. If I buy a petsafe collar, will it be compatible with my system. A replacement Innotek collar cost more than the whole underground system but a petsafe replacement collar is way cheaper. Thoughts?

ADMIN – Hi Matt. I’m sorry. PetSafe bought out Innotek and all of the Innotek products have been discontinued. This includes the Innotek/PetSafe UltraSmart, IUC 5100, Contain n Train, IUC 4100, etc. The replacement collars are not being made any more and there are no currently available collars that are compatible with these systems. You can sometimes find replacements on eBay and a few other sites, but they cost between roughly $100 and $300.
Another option would be to keep your existing dog fence wire (provided there are no wire breaks in the perimeter loop) and upgrade your transmitter and collar to a new system.
Simply, unplug the old transmitter, connect the new transmitter, and test the collar with the Test Light Tool on your new dog fence system.
Also, the newer dog fence systems have replacement collars more readily available than the older dog fence systems.
If you are interested in replacing your system, please visit our Dog Fence DIY Reviews page to see currently available systems.

I have a petsafe yard max underground fence. Are there any sport dog collars compatible ?

ADMIN – Hi Liz. No. I’m sorry but the YardMax system will only work with the YardMax collar. This system is NOT cross-collar compatible.

I have a Pet Friendly Products in ground electric fence system at my house. I need another collar do you know what other brand collar is compatible with my system?

ADMIN – Hi Dedra. From the information we have, there is not another collar outside of the Pet Friendly products that would work with your system.

I have a petsafe PIG00-14673 system. What sport dog collars can I use? The ones from pet safe didn’t last more than 6 months.

ADMIN – Hi Will. You can use the PetSafe Ultralight Delixe PUL-275, PetSafe Stubborn Dog Fence collar, SportDog Fence collar SDF-R and the PetSafe Cat fence collar.

I have an SDF 100 Sportdog system, and would love to be able to use these with it: PetSafe Pawz Away Extra Mini Pet Barrier Transmitter, PWF00-14040
Would that work?

ADMIN – Hi Vicky. That pet barrier will not work with the SportDog system. The zone that will work with the SportDog system is the PetSafe Indoor Radio Fence.

We have an inground pet safe system. With two collars. I am wondering if there are any compatible smaller less bulky collars that my small French Bull dog can wear.

Look forward to your suggestions.

Thank you

ADMIN – Hi Rose. We would need to know what system you have (model number or name) in order to tell you which collar or collars may be compatible with your current system. Please give us a call at 888-936-4349 or you can email to questions@dogfencediy.com

We have a 5lb. Maltese that we purchased a petsafe undergroundsystem for. Our underground no longer works and we now have the wireless system which says should be used by 8lb or larger. Can we use our original collar with the wireless system which is also petsafe? Thanks

ADMIN – Hi Scott. What is the model number of your PetSafe wireless dog fence system? I would need this information in order to check the compatibility of the PetSafe collar.
