Collars

Innotek IUC-5100 CollarEach dog on the system requires their own collar. The collar detects signals from the boundary wire and warns the dog if they get too close to the boundary. If they keep getting closer it corrects them with a static shock.

The Innotek IUC-5100 system includes one collar. If you have two or more dogs you will need to purchase additional collars. You can use either:

  • Innotek IUC-5100 Collars (IUC-5225, $114.95) - allow you to use the collar with the remote control included with the Innotek IUC-5100 system. They are about 50% bigger than the Innotek IUC-4100 collars. You can use up to two collars with the remote control at any one time. There is no limit to the number of collars you can use with the dog containment system. OR
  • Innotek IUC-4100 Collars (IUC-4225, $104.95) - a smaller and less expensive collar that can be used for dog containment with the Innotek IUC-5100 system, but will not work with the remote control. This option is useful if you have a smaller dog on the system that you want contained, but for whom you do not need the remote correction feature.

Extra Boundary Wire Kits

What are Boundary Wire Kits? When do I need them?

Boundary Wire KitEach boundary wire kit includes 500 feet of wire (20 gauge), 50 boundary marking flags, and 2 wire splices. Boundary wire kits are used to create and mark your containment boundary.

The Innotek IUC-5100 comes with one boundary wire kit included in the system. This creates a containment area up to approximately 1/3 of an acre. If your boundary will cover more than 500 linear feet, you will need additional boundary kits. Remember to factor in an extra 10-20% for waste. The Innotek IUC 5100 system has a maximum range of 25 acres or 5,000 linear feet.

How many Boundary Wire Kits do I need?

To figure out how much boundary wire you need, walk around your intended layout and count the number paces. Multiply the number of paces by 3 and this will approximate the amount of boundary wire you require (in feet).

The table below will also help you estimate the amount of wire needed:

Area (acres) Wire (feet) Extra Boundary Wire Kits
1/3 500 0
1/2 700 1
1 1,000 1
2 1,400 2
3 1,700 3
4 2,000 4
5 2,200 4
6 2,400 4
7 2,600 5
8 2,800 5
9 3,000 5
10 3,200 6
12 3,500 6
14 3,700 7
16 4,000 7
18 4,200 8
20 4,500 8
25 5,000 9

What Gauge Wire Do I Need?

20 18 16 14 wire gauge comparisonBoundary wire is available in four different thicknesses, ranging from the standard 20 gauge wire to the heavy duty 14 gauge wire.

Our experience suggests that 20 gauge wire is fine for most installations. There is little transmission difference between wire sizes unless you have an extremely large installation (i.e. > 20 acres). The thicker wires are also stiffer and can be a bit more difficult to work with.

Thicker wire is most useful for above ground installations in unmowed areas. The thicker wire holds up better to everyday wear and tear than the standard 20 gauge wire. The added stiffness of the thicker wire also helps it stay in place when not buried. However, even thicker wire is easily cut by lawn mowers or edgers and therefore should be buried in mowed areas.

If in doubt, stick with the standard 20 gauge wire. 20 gauge wire is fine for most applications.

Can I get the Boundary Wire, Splices, and Flags Separately?

Yes. Boundary wire, flags, and splices are available separately in our store, here

If I buy too many boundary wire kits, can I return them?

Yes. You can return any unwanted boundary wire kits within 30 days of receiving your system. Under our 30 day guarantee, anything returned within 30 days is fully refunded.

Can I use my own wire?

Yes. If you have your own boundary wire you can use it. We can remove the spool of wire included with the system and issue you a $10 discount.

Almost any insulated single copper wire will work. For best results, find a wire meeting the following specifications:

  • Wire rated for 600 volts (or greater)
  • Jacket rated for direct burial
It does not matter if the wire is solid or stranded. Both work equally well.

Avoid mixing wires that are very different thicknesses. You want the boundary wire to be a consistent gauge.

Lightning Protection Module

Lightning Protection Module LP-4100If lightning strikes the ground near your boundary, the lightning can go through the boundary wire and damage your dog fence system. The lightning protection module sits between the boundary wire and the control box protecting the control box from any sudden electrical surge. This device is recommended if you are installing a large boundary (more than 1,000 ft) or are in an area prone to lightning strikes. It is not as important if you have a small installation or live in an area with relatively few lightning occurrences.

The lightning protection module is different from a circuit breaker in your electrical system. Circuit breakers protect the electrical system in your house if there is a surge in current. The lightning protection module protects your transmitter box if there is a surge in current in the boundary wire.

The lightning protection module comes included in the Innotek IUC-5100 system.

Twisted Wire

Twisted WireTwisted wire is just two regular wires twisted together. It is most commonly used to connect the control box to the boundary loop. The benefit of using twisted wire is that the dog can walk over this section of wire without hearing an alarm or receiving a correction. Note that you cannot use twisted wire as part of the active (signal emitting) boundary loop. The two wires cancel out the boundary signal from the control box.

100 feet of 20 gauge twisted wire is included standard in the Innotek IUC-5100. If you upgrade the boundary wire for your system, we automatically upgrade your twisted wire to the same gauge.

You can make your own twisted wire by using two regular sections of boundary wire and twisting them together. An electric drill can be used to do this quickly. If you need less than 20 feet of twisted wire, you can typically twist it yourself. If you need more than 20 feet, we suggest you buy it since twisting long lengths of wire gets very messy very quickly!

Twisted wire is available in the standard 20 gauge, as well as the thicker 18 gauge, 16 gauge, and 14 gauge. 20 gauge is perfect for most installations although the thicker gauges are more resiliant to damage.

Dog Fence Experts Book

Dog Fence Experts BookThe Dog Fence Experts book is a step-by-step guide that explains everything you need to know to make your installation and training a success. The fully illustrated guide shares professional tips and tricks to make the whole process easy and fast. The book is provided as a PDF download that you can start reading as soon as you place your order so you will be ready for installation and training the moment your system arrives. (valued at $24.95)

Wire Break Kit

Wire Break KitThe wire break kit helps you find a break in the boundary wire. Using the included RF-choke, you can make the boundary wire emit a "throbbing" noise that can be picked up with any normal AM radio. Using the AM radio, follow the wire around the boundary until you find a spot where the throbbing noise stops. That is where you will find the break. The kit also includes boundary wire, two wire nuts, and two gel filled capsules for repairing any break you find. (valued at $14.95)
