How Many Dogs Can You Get on a Dog Fence System?

How many dogs can I get on the dog fence?  How do I add extra dogs?

You can have an unlimited number of dogs on a dog fence system.  All you need is an extra collar for each dog. Note that some electric dog fences like the Petsafe Stubborn are cross-compatible giving you the flexibility to buy collars that are suitable for dogs of every size.

When you select your dog collars consider ongoing expenses such as batteries and when possible opt for a collar that is rechargeable.

The right wired fence for your property depends on many factors such as the topography (layout of the land) and size of the perimeter you are wishing to contain.

The one exception is the Perimeter Technologies Wifi Fence that can only have two dogs on the system at the same time.

I bought the Innotek Ultrasmart system from you 6 months ago for our 60 lb boxer lab mix. We have since added a 10 lb pomeranian papillon mix to the family who has taken an interest in the road. Mozzy faithfully stays inside the fence while the little dog goes out and plays with cars. Can we simply add a collar for little dog and have them both on the system, or will this system be too strong for him? I am worried as we bought fencing to surround 4 acres and am very reluctant to change it all out.
Thank you.

Admin-Hi Julie,

As long as the Pomeranian Papilon neck size is at least 8 inches around the collar should work great.

Innotek does not offer independent correction levels for each collar on a system; therefore, each dog a system would receive the same correction level. But you can reduce the correct level on the collars for smaller dogs. We call it a resistor hack or the work around method. Please view the link to see our instructional video on the resistor hack:

Is there a fence that I could use for a little dog around 15 lbs. but also for a boxer around 60 lbs. Do I just need different collers?

Admin-Hi Sandra,

Absolutely, The best system would be the PetSafe Little Dog PIG00-10773. You will use the included collar for the little dog and bundle in a PetSafe Deluxe collar for your Boxer. The PetSafe Little Dog has Independent Correction Levels; therefore, you will able to adjust the correction levels on both the collars for each dog. The PetSafe system can cover up to 25 acres.

I think that I like the Innotek 4100 better, but my dogs are borderline in weight. I have a Cocker Spaniel and a mini Snauzer. Do you think this system will work for them ? And how do I get an Additional collar ? Thanks

ADMIN – Hi Trent,

Twelve pounds is a good cutoff weight between the Innotek 4100 and the PetSafe Little Dog Fence. When unsure, I always start with the Innotek, put the collars on the dogs (with the system off) and see if they are comfortable after a couple of hours. If they are uncomfortable, we can switch out the systems for you and you can do the PetSafe Little Dog.

Extra collars are available for all the system on the configuration screen. (Once you click add to card, you will go to another screen that gives you the ability to add additional accessories like extra collars, boundary kits, twisted wire, lightning protection module, indoor/outdoor zones, etc)

What if the wire is buried with 2 or 3 feet of snow. Will it hurt the operation?

ADMIN – Hi Dave,

The system will work fine through the snow. As the snow accumulates you need to increase the boundary width, by turning up the “field strength” dial up to compensate for the snow. Then as the snow melts in the spring you need to turn it back down.
