Tips For Naming Your New Puppy

by Gayla on March 3, 2014

Choosing a name for a new puppy can be very difficult to do, sometimes even harder than training them. This name is something your dog will live with for the rest of their life, and it’s something that you will need to be comfortable with telling people and calling out in public. When it comes time to naming your new puppy, the following tips will help.

Make a list.

You’re going to spitfire a ton of names for your dog, so make sure you start a list of all the names you and your family and friends think of. If you don’t, you’ll end up forgetting the name that you really liked. Once you have a list, you can go through the list to try and determine which names make the cut and which ones you really don’t like.

Get everyone involved.

If you have a family, be sure that you allow everyone to have a say in the dog’s name. Since you’re making a list, you can always overrule a name that you don’t like, but it’s always a good idea to let your kids and other family members have a say. This makes them feel more connected to the dog and shows your family that the dog is now a member of the family. If your entire family cannot agree on a name, you can always write down the final options on a piece of paper and pick one randomly out of a hat.

Pick something you’re comfortable saying.

Yes, naming your dog something completely random and strange may seem like a good idea until you’re running down the driveway yelling Mr. Banana Hammock or introducing your family to Princess Monkey Wrench. Remember that your dog’s name is something you will be calling out in public as well as something that you publicly say when at the vet or dog park. If you’re not comfortable saying it in public, then don’t name your dog that.

If you’re not sure whether or not you like a name, call it out loud. This will show you exactly what the name sounds like, and what you’ll look like, if you’re calling the dog’s name out in public. If something sounds strange or embarrassing, don’t use it.

Choose something that means something to you.

A great way to think of a name for your dog is to choose a name that means something to you. Is there a sport or professional sporting team that you love? You can choose a name that relates to that. Are you fond of your heritage? You can choose a name that related to that. Do you have a favorite celebrity? Find something that relates to the celebrity that you can name your dog.

If you’re going to name your dog after someone famous, you need to remember that your dog will forever have the name. If the celebrity does something stupid, your dog will still have that name. If your athlete gets traded to a team you hate, your dog will still have that name. Make sure that you’re willing to live with these consequences.
