Reader Question: How old is too old?

… Is my dog too old?

We have all heard the proverb that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but is that really true?  From our experience you can teach healthy dogs of any age how to use an underground dog fence.  We have sucessfully taught dogs over ten years old how to use a dog fence.

Some things to not with older dogs:

  1. Need – most old dogs aren’t really prone to roaming, do they need a dog fence?
  2. Senses – some older dogs have impaired hearing.  Often even the owner does not know and just thinks their dog is stubborn.  Have someone make a high pitch noise behind the dog and see if they prick up their ears or turn to face the noise.  If your dog has lost their hearing it will be much harder to train them but still possible.  You will just need to spend more time teaching them to recognize the flags rather than relying on the collar beeping.

Depends on the health of the dog.

I have successfully trained 14 year old dogs who remained on the fence until 17 years old.

Always consult with your vet on health matters.
