Once your dog learns the system, it will tend to stay away from the border, so if you leave the collar off it will still tend to stay in your yard out of habbit. Over time, it will learn that it can escape without consequences. How long that takes depends on your dog.
But to answer your question, it probably won’t do any harm if you don’t put their collar on every now and then, but if you leave the collar off for extended periods the dog will start escaping. If I were you, I would leave it on, to us it would not be worth the risk.
